Poppit Sands Holiday Cottage

Poppit Sands

Poppit Sands is a vast golden sandy beach on the west coast of Wales in Cardigan Bay, with large sand dunes at the mouth of the Teifi Estuary. The holiday cottage is right on the beach. Lifeguards patrol Poppit Sands beach between July and August. It is the start of the Pembrokeshire coastal path to Amroth which is some 180 miles along the coast. It is a blue flag (well ex blue flag this year!)  bathing beach which ensures good water quality and is the town beach for Cardigan. Poppit beach offers a large flat open space idle for dog walking and beach activities, including rock pools on the western edge for added activities !

Morawel is a holiday cottage in Wales which is approached along a track about 100 yards long through the sand dunes and running parallel to the beach and stands in the Pembrokeshire National Park. The private track goes only to the 4 holiday cottages on the beach and there are just the 3 holiday cottages beyond ours.

The cottage at Poppit Sands consists of a large lounge and kitchen area. One end of which is a fitted kitchen with hob/oven, microwave, fridge and freezer.  The lounge includes a TV, HD Freesat, Video and intergrated DVD platyer. The settee in the lounge converts into a double bed. There is one bedroom with a fitted wardrobe and cupboards and a double bed. The second bedroom on the front of the property has two single beds. The cottage can sleep a maximum of six people. There is a bathroom, with w.c., shower cubicle and autowasher-drying machine. There are night storage heaters which are ample even for the coldest weather. Pets are welcome. There is room for one car to park beside the cottage.

The cottage is cleaned between guests. Linen and bedding are provided (excluding towels). The water supply is mains water. The spot is ideal for young children as there is only 10 yds of lawn between the cottage and the sandy beach. There is a pub about half a mile away, and Cardigan town is 4 miles away with two supermarkets a swimming pool a small theatre and restaurants. Poppit Sands Caravan Park is about half a mile away.

Directions:

From Cardigan you need to follow signs to St Dogmaels. Easiest way is from Cardigan bypass. From the traffic island where the A478 and A4971 meet take the exit into Cardigan and drop down the hill. Just before you reach the bridge over the river turn left (Eagle Inn on the corner). Follow this road into St Dogmaels and up the high street. At the top of the high street turn right (its not really a turn as thats the way the road goes, but it is a 90 degree bend and is signed to Poppit). Follow the road out of St Dogmaels parallel with the River Teifi for about 2 miles. You are now in Poppit! Carry on past the car park on the left and drive past the lifeboat station on the right. About 10 yds past the lifeboat station you go straight on, although the road turn’s 90 degrees left. You are now on an un-made track. Follow the track for about 200yds and you arrive at Morawel. Ignore the no parking signs past this point !

There are number of coastal walks starting in and around Poppit Sands that take in some of Pembrokeshires fantastic rocky coast line.  The beach having vast expanses of sand at low tide is popular with kite boarders  and the gentle slopping beach is ideal for learning to surf and general playing in the waves in a safe(ish) way.  The Poppit Sands cafe is about 400 yards away selling light refreshments and snacks and the village of St Dogmaels has a general store which is open 7 days a week.

There are lots of outdoor pursuits centres around catering for white water and sea kayaking, surf schools , bike hire , coasteering and horse riding.  There is a comprehensive tourist information point in Cardigan with all the local and not so local attractions, which will keep anyone busy for weeks.

My very amateur video of Poppit Sands beach is here, showing the size of the beach and the exact location of the cottage to it.

Poppit Sands Caravan Park  or Cardigan Bay Park as I think its now known as can be found at this link which offers some great facilities and is pretty close to the beach.  Why not visit our links page to see some other interesting places to visit or read about.  If you would like to advertise related content on our site then please drop us an email (neil at poppit-sands.co.uk) for rates
