Nestled on the southwestern coast of Wales, Pembrokeshire is a stunning county known for its rugged coastline, sandy beaches, and picturesque villages. While popular tourist destinations like Tenby and St. Davids attract thousands of visitors each year, there is so much more to this beautiful region that often goes unnoticed. As a local resident, I have had the privilege of exploring the hidden gems of Pembrokeshire and I am excited to share my insider knowledge with you. 1. Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Pembrokeshire is by walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Spanning 186 miles, this long-distance trail follows the entire coastline of the county, offering breathtaking views of the sea, cliffs, and beaches. While the entire trail takes around 10-15 days to complete, you can choose to do shorter sections based on your time and fitness level. Some of the most scenic sections include the stretch from Tenby to Saundersfoot, and the section between Newgale and St. Davids. Along the way, you can also spot rare wildlife, such as seals, dolphins, and puffins.
2. Explore the Preseli Hills
Tucked away in the northern part of Pembrokeshire, the Preseli Hills are a true hidden gem. This rugged and remote landscape is rich in history, as it is believed to be the source of the bluestones used to build Stonehenge. You can take a walk through the hills, following the ancient drovers’ tracks and admiring the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also try wild camping in the hills, but make sure to follow the Leave No Trace principles and obtain proper permission if needed.
3. Visit the Secret Waterfalls
Pembrokeshire is home to some stunning waterfalls, but the ones hidden away in the forests of the county are truly special. One of my favorites is the Secret Waterfall near Cilgerran, which requires a short hike through the woods to reach. The cascading waterfall and the tranquil surroundings make it a perfect spot for a picnic or just to sit and soak in the beauty of nature. Other hidden waterfalls worth exploring include the Melin Tregwynt Waterfall near Fishguard and the Nant-y-Coy Waterfall near Cardigan.
