Welsh Valentine’s Day: St. Dwynwyn’s Day

St. Dwynwen’s Day is the Welsh version of Valentine’s Day, and is celebrated on the 25th of January. The day commemorates the life of Saint Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers. According to legend, Dwynwen fell in love with a man named Maelon Dafodrill, but her father, Brychan, forbid their marriage. Dwynwen prayed to be released from her love, and an angel appeared to her in a dream and gave her a potion that would make Maelon forget her. However, the potion also caused Maelon to fall into a deep sleep. Dwynwen was so distraught that she prayed for Maelon to be released from the potion’s spell. The angel then gave her a second potion, which restored Maelon to life. In her gratitude, Dwynwen became a nun and devoted her life to helping others find love.
